H1b will expire - married to US citizen, EAD and driver's license

Good day to everyone,
I am currently having a valid H1b that will expire this July of 2012, the same as my Driver's license, I got married recently March, 2012 and we plan to file a temporary green card.
My concerns are: With temporary green card, I know it comes with Work authorization permit if approved, but I already have valid h1b but I dont want to be out of status while my Green card is pending as if I still need to earn money. Im wonderin if they will issue a work permit with my gc application even thou i have h1b that is valid til July 2012. And if I file my GC and not renew my h1b, the problem is my driver's license and able to work. I know either way I wont be able to drive until i get approval notice.

I am very confused, please give me a wise advice so I know where to start.

Dear Marrie,

You will need to adjust your status and then get EAD (employer Authorization document) and then you can work.

You can adjust your status from non-immigrant to immigrant.

Thanks for the reply, can I file the adjustment status first before the green card? how long before I can get the EAD approval?
