Plastic Green Card how it takes for dependent

Me and wife got GC thru consular process and i got my plastic card. But my wife has yet to get it. HOW LONG IT TAKES? Is there anyway we can check the status. I called the INS toll free number, but no use. They told only after 6 months we can say the status.
Now she is planning to go back to India, what happen after a year? Because the passport was stamped with I-551 and its valid only for a year. CAN WE RENEW IT IN INDIA. Thanks in advance.

You would have to call the INS service center the file went through to get the 13-digit number that corresponds to the A#. But as usual, INS is often not very helpful. The IIOs often just say that they can't find the A# in their system.
As for your wife going back to India, this is hopefully only a temporary stay abroad. To keep the GC, a PR has to have his or her residence in the US.
Finally, it is not possible to renew the stamp outside the US.
