Is Passport stamping necessary for getting GC?

We got our I-485 approval and so we had gone to INS office for passport stamping.

They took our advanced parole, I-94 & photographs. We filled the forms and they took our signature & fingerprints on it. But did not stamped the passport. We(all of us applying that day) were told that they will call us for stamping and we will receive the green card by mail in 6 months. Also told us that stamping is only necessary if we are planning to leave the country meanwhile, it is absolutely our wish.

Need suggestions whether we should go and try again for passport stamping or not?

You should get the stamp. It is your only official proof that you are a PR, and you are required by law to have such proof.
