Change to SSN after GC

Do we need to go to SSN office and update the status when one gets GC(previously on H1).

I need to know since fearing a lay-off sometime(got my GC 1 month back - stamp only, plastic card awaited) and might have to claim Unemployment Insurance. Is it necessary to change status with Social Security Office to be eligible for Unemployment Insurance?

Any help/comment appreciated.

You must do this. I do not think this has to with unemployment insurance. But you will have to do this at some point.
