  • Re-entry issues at only 8 months outside US?

    Hi,

So my girlfriend got her green card last October 2013 and had to leave the US to Dominican Republic to help her sick grand mother, we are planning her return to the US to be next June 2014. Since it's only 8 months outside the US, its within the time frame an LPR can travel without a permit, but we were wondering if the fact that she left just weeks after she received the card could bring us trouble when coming back? Is there someone we could talk about this case? Any answers will be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    JB

You don't need to "talk to someone" about your gal's reentry to the U.S. after 8 months. She just needs to be prepared to explain why she was out for 8 months (family member needed medical assistance).

New LPRs often have to leave to wrap up business back home, so it wouldn't be frowned upon as much as you think. She can explain that she had to take care of a sick relative. Proof of her grandmother being sick would be good (from a hospital/doctor) in case the officer wants to be a pain.

Thanks for the answers. Knowing that its common event for LPR's to leave for some months to take care of a few things is really soothing.
