  • Condition PR expires in 6 mo, leaving US, when to apply for reentry permit?

    Hi,

I have a conditional permanent resident that expires in six months. The conditional permanent resident was obtained by marriage to a US citizen (we are still married).
I'll be out of the country for about two years, but I'd like to keep the process sailing along to progress to a true permanent resident, and then to citizenship.

I will still go ahead and apply for the removal of conditional status 3 months before I leave the US, but when will I get my true PR status changed? Can I be abroad when the status change eventually goes through?

When do I apply for a reentry permit and how long does it take to
receive one? Does the 2 year clock start when I actually leave the US
or from the date that they approve the permit?

While abroad, will the clock still be running so that I can get citizenship 3 years after obtaining true permanent resident status , or must I be in the USA for the entire 3 years?

What are the consequences of letting your green card expire if you are willing to apply and start over from scratch? I'd have to apply again based on being married to a US citizen. Are they harder on you the second time around, or is it just a matter going through all of the motions again and waiting the allotted time again?

    Thanks!
