Travelling to DEL via AMS and MSP with I-551 stamp

I understand that I-551 stamp has the legal power for someone who possesses to work and travel in USA.But I will appreciate if someone can share his or her experiences travelling to DEL via AMS and MSP by NWA-KLM. I don't have visa of Holland but I think that should be fine. Should I take any extra pre-caution for these entry/exit points ? I will be carrying the xerox copy of Courtsey approval copy of I-485.

Any other input will be very appreciated.

Hi,

From what I have experienced travelling with I-551 stamp is that, its enough to enter/exit USA and enter/exit India ( considering you have Indian passport) , there is no problem. But if you want to use I-551 stamp as a proof of "US permanent residency" and try to enter a 3rd country, you might have problem with their immigration officer. For example, for our vacationing in Switzerland, we had an issue. Switzerland doesn't require visitor visas for US permanent residents. I showed the I-551 stamp on my passport and that was denied as a proof for green card. They want to see the real GREEN CARD.
But I have heard that Canada/Mexico authorities have no problem with I-551 stamp as a proof of Green Card.

So in your case, if you expect Holland authorities are going to consider your I-551 stamp as a proof of US PR, you are taking your chances.

Hi,

Just wanted to add to my previous reply. If you are NOT leaving the AMS airport ( you are a transit passenger and are in AMS airport waiting to catch the connecting flight to DEL ), you don't need to worry at all. You would be interracting with Holland Immigration authorities only if you intend to enter & stay in their Country.

Better call local dutch consulate and ask them.
While you have PR status, some countries still require visa depending on citizenship(s).
I also heard (dig down this forum to see it too) I551 is not enough for other countries that do accept plastic GC.

I will be just taking the connecting flight there. I won't be going out of Amsterdam Airport at all. I will be in the waiting lounge for few hrs.. that's it. Last time I went via the same route..I didn't have I-551 stamp at that time. I just had H1-B visa. I am sure for a passenger like me who will be just connecting the onward journey to DEL via MSP do not require visa of Holland. I am sure but gurus can throw some more light on that.

I have traveled on KLM via Amsterdam twice. First in 1995, I was on visitor visa and second time in 1998 on H-1B. We stayed in the lounge for 3-4 hours. Did not go out of airport. No transit visa was required. Only problem in 1998 was horrible experience with the airline KLM. I hate KLM and will never try to travel in the future. Its long old story and will not waste time & space here.

You don't need any visa whatsoever if you are a transit passenger in Holland. They may look for a valid visa or GC (I551) stamp on your departure from India or Holland (on the way back). Since you already have that stamp, you will be fine.
