Extension of I-551 & travelling outside US

My POE was 01/2001, so far I have not recieved the Plastic card & have sent requestion to INS about this, All in vain.

Now I have to plans go out of US maybe for about 6 months, Can I get an extension now itself or I have to wait till the extension time is veri close!( I mean first week of Jan or so).

Your advise is appreciated.

I think that recent posts to this forum suggest that you can get an extension now.
If you are going to INS offices, get I89 redone (or you may do I90 instead).
