About revalidation of I-551

Hello,
I got my I-551 after CP on Dec 25,2000 at SFO airport. I will have to travel out of the US for personal reasons for a couple of months soon. All in all, it seems to me that I will not receive my plastic card and will have to get my stamp revalidated. I have the following Q's regarding that:

1. Can I get my I-551 restamped *now* or must it be done no more than, say, a month before its expiry, or something like that?
2. Where do I go to get it revalidated? Is it local INS office or anyplace else? (I am in SFO bay area.)
3. Can I get it revalidated outside the US?
Any info on this thread will be highly appreciated.

I had my I-551 re-stamped, since my passport which had the original I-551 had expired. No questions were asked. In fact, the person at the info. booth did it there and there. You can give it a try, explaining your circumstances.

You can get it revalidated at your local INS ofice.

3. Can I get it revalidated outside the US?
No idea
