Hello all,
I am seeking advice on the following. I am planning to be out of the country for approximately 11 months starting Aug. 2015 while my husband (US citizen) will temporarily work abroad. Our destination is my country of origin. However, my (unconditional) Green Card expires in March 2016. What are my options to renew it?
I talked to somebody at the USCIS service hotline today and got the recommendation to apply for a new green card immediately, i.e., 11 months before it expires. The USCIS website clearly states to apply within 6 months of the expiration date. Has anybody tried applying this early? It all seems a bit risky to me.
In addition, the same person recommended for me to apply for a reentry permit, just to be on the safe side, even though I was planning on returning to the US before 12 months were up. Any thoughts on this? In my view, we have plenty of evidence that I will not abandon residency in the US.
Thanks in advance, your advice is much appreciated.
