  • Returning Resident Visa

I am a US Citizen and my husband has been a permanent resident since 1997. While on travel in my husbands country (Chile), he had pancreatitis, and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He had emergency surgery, went into septic shock, and needed follow-up surgery. He has just been released from hospital care, but he was out of the US for 18 months. We went to the US Embassy with a complete copy of his medical record, his green card, passport and medical letter from his surgeon, detailing all that was done to save his life. The consul officer that reviewed his file said that his file is good, and sees no reason for a denial of the Returning Resident Visa. I started reading about this type of visa, and noticed it was a lengthy process. When the consul officer spoke to us, he said he needed our file approved by his boss, and that they would contact us within a few days so we can go back to the Embassy to pick up our paperwork and get us on our way back home. My question is did I misunderstand the officer, thinking we would be on our way home soon?
