Hello all,
I apologize if I am asking a question that has been asked before, as I have just registered on this site.
I am a permanent resident who is planning to study abroad in UK for one year starting September 2015. However, there are 2 issues:
1. My green card will expire around May next year. Since I can only apply to renew up to months before the expiration date, does this mean I will not be able to apply for a renewal now?
2. I was planning on applying for an I-131 re-entry permit. However, I still have a re-entry permit in from 2013, which will expire in September 2015. Am I allowed to apply for another re-entry permit before my current one expires? If I'm not mistaken, the USCIS suggests mailing in your old re-entry permit with the application for a new one - am I interpreting that correctly?
3. If I have a valid re-entry permit, can I come back to the US with an expired green card?
4. If I cannot apply for either a re-entry permit or a green card renewal before I depart, are there any steps I should take to ensure that I can come back to the US?
