  • Lost green card - when to get a temporary I-551 stamp (when to make an appointment)

Hello! We have a tough situation - my wife lost her green card but we need to travel in several weeks and come back. I studied quite many articles here, and it seems that she can get a temporary I-551 stamp before getting the actual plastic card (right?).

She already e-filed a Form I-90 for replacement. What will be the fastest way to get such a stamp before an international travel? May she just make an Infopass appointment now? Does she have to wait until a receipt notice comes, or until we know the biometric date?

Could anyone explain the process? Thank you very much in advance!

Make an Infopass appointment as soon as possible. Available appointments are usually 2 weeks out. If she is polite and persistent, she might get away with walking into a Field Office without an appointment - but she should be prepared for a long wait and the prospect of being told to come back with an appointment.

She will get her receipt notice through ELIS in 72 hours. She should print that out and bring it to the field office with government issued ID, preferably her unexpired passport. There is less work for the field office agents to do if she brings her passport.

      (Thanks)

Thank you so much for reply!!!

So, it does not have to be after taking fingerprint, right? Hopefully they can just put a stamp on the appointment day, without further waiting? We do have her valid passport and a good copy of her (lost) green card.

She made an Infopass reservation. Actually we didn't know which option to select, so just selected "to file an application in person". Will this be all right??
Other options didn't look more appropriate. Under the option "Service on a case that has already been filed," the sub-menus don't fit to our case... Another option is "you are a new Permanent Resident and have not yet received your Permanent Resident Card" but she is not a new PR.

      Many thanks again!!!
