Renew green card or file for n400 citizenship again?

My wife's 10 year permanent resident card is set to expire next month. She applied for n400 to become us citizenship but failed civics test twice. So at this point is it best to renew resident card before it expires(not planning to leave country this year) or should she file n400 again? What happens if resident card expires without renewing? Cost of resident card application is around $450 but I figured she might as well try again for n400.

A. If you fail to renew your expiring card, you may experience difficulties in obtaining
employment, benefits, and re-entry into the United States from abroad. When you submit
your renewal application in-person, you will receive temporary evidence of your lawful
permanent resident status.

Maybe try the fee waiver if you qualify if you don't want to pay the fees...

Thanks for the answer. here's another question... I'm currently unemployed but filed tax for 18k last year, Can I(us citizen)sponsor my wife(who currently has been here 10 years)?
We are having an issue getting her state benefits because her sponsor is no longer in the country. So what's our best option?

The citizenship test consists of 100 questions. Out of those 100 question, she will be asked 10 - out of which she has to answer six right, for a 60% success rate. All the materials are available at http://www.uscis.govhttps://www.immi...ers/study-test

Let's be honest here for a second - if she has lived in the US for ten years, she should be able to answer *all 100 of them*. Otherwise, she clearly hasn't been paying attention to the history, laws, etc of the country that hosted her for ten years . . .

You can either renew the card or apply for citizenship. Just remember: permanent residency doesn't expire (the status DOES NOT expire - only the card expires), but CAN BE REVOKED. Citizenship CAN BE REVOKED TOO - but it is extremely difficult to revoke citizenship, while revoking permanent resident status is very easy.

In other words . . . if tomorrow your wife is caught doing something illegal, for a citizen it may mean a felony charge (depending on what she did) and a small to no sentence in prison. For a permanent resident, it would probably end in time in presion - and revocation of permanent resident status.

So - both of you get studying the 100 questions, get her to learn the answers, get her to apply again. And welcome to the US - the country that hosted her for ten years, but for which she still has no idea how it works.
