Hello Senior members,

Thank you for providing excellent help. My green card application has been approved and I should be receiving it soon. I was on H1 visa earlier and received my green card in family based GC category. I have a question regarding my Social security card. I have my SC card based on my H1 visa, do I need to apply for a new SC card now that I have received GC or can I continue using my old SC card?

The **number** won't change. The actual physical card **should be changed** .

Your current card reads "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.". You should complete form SSA-5, ONCE YOU HAVE THE GREEN CARD IN YOUR POSSESSION, and get a replacement card with that message removed.

Do you HAVE to do it ? No - again, your existing card and number are still valid. However, next time you need to present your SS card, it may raise questions.

Getting a new SS card takes usually a week (between the time you go to the SS office and they mail the card out), and about 20 minutes at the SS office (not including the wait).
