USA to Mexico to avoid abandoning of Green Card

My ecuadorian wife is in the process for green card. She will be in the United States for a few months, then return to Ecuador.

She will remain in Ecuador for more than a year and not apply for extension and will surley loose her green card.

Question: Is it possible to leave through mexico and fly to Ecuador. When she returns in a few years, fly back into Mexico and when re-entering the USA, explain that she visited Mexico for a weekend, thus not having to loose green card?

It is unclear whether your wife has a green card or is in the process of getting one.

If she already has a green card, she needs to spend approximately half of her time in the United States to maintain her status. Her point of entry in the US is I think not relevant.

Apply for a Reentry Permit with form I-131, which will allow your wife to stay out of the U.S. for up to two years.
