Apologies if this has been answered before. Some background to my question

I've completed the process for my mother to move to the US permanently. Working through the process, fees, interviews and medical, she was accepted for permanent residence. So her passport was sent away and an Immigrant visa was attached to it - date was 19th August 2015 expiring after 1 year of entry.

    Couple of questions
    - When would the actual green card be expected?
    - Does it only get issued when she moves here permanently?
    - If she tries to travel into the US after the 1 year expires, does she have to file additional paperwork or some kind of re-entry visa?

A Social Security card has been issued, but no Green card

    Any advice would be welcome

Immigration visas are good for 6 months or when the medical expires whichever is first. Upon entry, the visa becomes a temporary 1 year green card (I-551). She does not have a visa that expires 1 year after entry. Please check your mother's visa.

The actual green card arrives after she immigrates to the US and pay the $165 fee.

She will not be allowed into the US with an expired visa. Expired means that it's no longer good for travel to the US.
