  • Trouble getting back in the US with my greencard after 1986 DWI offence

I am an UK citizen and have had my green card since the early eighties, I have renewed it twice now. Something has changed regarding re-entry to the US when I leave the country and return. The immigration officer scans my green card and says I cant clear you from here. I have to go to a special room and wait to be called, I'm then asked if I have ever had a felony, I say no but I had a DWI in 1986 which is a misdemeanor in Texas, the guys then says OK you can go. This has happened the last three times I have left the US and is a new thing, I never had any issues before. Is there anything I can do to alleviate this process so my wife and children don't always have to wait extra hours for me.

    Thanks for any advice.

In my experience, no, there is nothing you can do to remove the red flag on your immigration record

Short of obtaining a US passport, you will always be subject to secondary inspection upon entry

One thing you can do is naturalize.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
