Entering to US with a soon to Expire green card

Hi every one!

I plan to travel to my home country for a short visit, I will back to US 10 days before the expiration date of my green card. I sent my document to renew my conditional green card 2 months ago and received the letter stating that my residency has been extended for another year till my new green card will be issued.

I was wondering if airlines allow passengers to board on with soon to expire green card or is there any problem in returning to US.


My home country is in the list of countries that was mentioned in EO!

Any suggestion please.

You could certainly run into some problems if your home country is listed in the EO. That no one can predict. As for traveling in general, you would just carry your green card and the letter stating your residency has been extended for another year.

While the EO has been put on hold due to the court order, i believe the updated EO (and the clarified original EO) said LPR/GC holders are not affected. But at PoE, you are at the mercy of the officer's understanding of the EO.

thank you for your response! I sent the Email to CBP and they replied that as far as my green card is valid I don't have any problem and I am married to US citizen, I know I am taking risk but I would never know when is the next time for me to visit my family! hope I can back without problem.

If you can renew your green card (assuming yours is the 10 year one/not the conditional 2 year), and you are in the middle of your wait for your replacement GC, you can get I 551 sticker which will be valid for 1 year. It is the same as GC. I believe you need to schedule INFOPASS for that purpose. Not sure the cost though. i might have to resort to this as well
