Help - Getting black mailed on Reentry Permit!

Hi All,
I am in tricky situation. I got GC in 2004. For entire year 2006 in needed to be outside US. so I applied for Re-entry permit in Dec05 and got it in Feb 06.

I gave address of my friend to receive Re-entry permit and came to india in Jan05. After receiving it my friend delayed mailing it back and now asking me $2000 to give it back to me.

I dont have case number for Re-entry permit. Please let me know
how I can get duplicate Re-entry permit or if I can force legal action and make my crappy friend return my Re-entry permit.

This sounds like serious criminal behavior by your friend. If I were you, I'd immediately report the reentry permit as stolen. The authorities need to invalidate it in their system (in case your friend tries selling it to someone else) and issue a replacement which should be sent directly to you. Your green card number should be enough for them to locate your case. Probably the first step is to go to the nearest US consulate and report the incident to them. They should have the application forms to replace a lost or stolen document and be able to offer other assistance.

If you send $2000 to your friend, what if he still doesn't send it and asks for another $2000?

Thanks. This is pro****ly best advice I can get. I just dont want to give him money and pray that he will actually return it.
So I am going to do exactly what you said report to US consulate as see what they have to say about this.

Update with Good News!

Hi Guys,

So I went to consulate and guy there said he can not be of much help and treated this rightly as personal problem. but he said you can still go to US as six months from my last departures are not completed.

So I called my friend and left voice mail that I comimg to US and file crimilnal complaint and get him jail. Trick worked and he sent my re-entry permit.

Some one else has advised me to file I-824 for not sure if that might have also worked for me.
