Mod, please post this wherever you see fit.
This is question is regarding an upcoming exit and entrance to and from Canada as a travel destination. My wife is a holder of a 10 year non-conditional permanent resident green card. We were recently married a few months ago (our marriage has nothing to do with her immigration status), and although she has changed her driver license and social security card into her new married name, she has not yet done so with her Japanese passport or US green card.
I have visited the us immigration website and spoke on the phone with a representative who confirmed to me that she is under no obligation to change her name on the green card right now (though, she said, perhaps recommended(?)). My question is will we encounter problems traveling to and from Canada if my wife travels with her name on her ticket as full married name (?First, maiden name as new middle name, last name as current married name?) yet the green card shows only as her first name and maiden name?
We have not updated her Japanese passport yet, as we are hesitant to do so if she will encounter problems with her passport being in her married name and green card in the maiden name. Please advise, as I have only seen many threads of the opposite scenario, where the green card is in married name but passport is in maiden name. Also please let us know if it would be less of a hassle to leave Japanese passport name and green card name both in maiden names to avoid issues.
Here are the discrepancies of documents:
Note: ?Must? versus ?May?
You also may replace your Green Card if:
Your name or other biographic information has been legally changed.
You have taken up commuter status. This means you commute regularly to work in the United States but reside in Canada or Mexico.
This document differs in writing that the green card must be updated after name change.
