green card expiration

My parents green card will expire in May 2007. I am filling the I-90 for them very soon. I have two qustions:

1) who is a commuter permanent resident? (question#1 in I-90 concering the status of the green card holder)

2) If the process takes long and the green card expires, how can they travel outside U.S?

I would appritiate any help on this. Thanks

1. They are NOT. It refers to the people living around the border of Canada/Mexico who travel everyday in and out of US for work.

2. Try to get temporary green card stamp.
