Can we leave US before getting GC

Hi, I have got US visa in september 07. I will be getting greencard when I arrive at USA. My mom's sister filed our application back in 94.

I plan to come to US in october. How long does it take to get my greencard once I arrive at USA? I am studying in India and so I will have to come back to India within a month. Can I come back to India before I receive my greencard?

As soon as you enter the US, you get a green card stamp in your passport. That is your green card.

What you receive later is just a convenient plastic card that proves your permanent resident status.

But as far the travel and status are concerned, the stamp in your passport is as good as plastic card. You can leave the next day after arrival in the US, if you want to.
