Re-Entry permit question

Hi,
If I apply for a 1 year re-entry permit but decide to return after 2 months, does the re-entry permit become invalid when I return or does it remain valid for the 1 year period for which it was initially approved ?
Currently how long does it take for a re-entry application to get approved at VSC?
