Expired Green Card / Pls help

Hi,

My stepdad has been living here in the US since 1985. He is a permanent resident here in California. He has never travel to any countries yet.

His green card had expired on 2002 and wondering if it is ok to go and renew his green card on the i90 form. Will there be any penelties for this? Is there a possible chance for deportation? Have anyone experience this problem with an expired greencard for more than a yr?

Pls advise?

Read that for information on how to renew it, the failure to have it renewed does not constitute the lost of his permanent residency. So he can file I-90 for renewal, but make sure he includes a "good reason" why he has waited 5 years.

Also, make sure he DOES NOT leave the country until he receives the updated Green Card and that he files AR-11 if he has changed addresses in the past.
