Hello there.
I hope you can help me. I am outside the US and have been unable to contact anyone at USCIS by phone (the 1-800 number does not function from outside of the US).
Here is my situation:
I currently hold a Green Card/Permanent Resident card (which is due to expire 10/9/13). In July 2006 my family moved to Canada for a 2-year temporary stay because of a job my husband was offered.
Upon checking at my – then - local USCIS office (in Albany NY) and at the land border crossing between Canada and the US at Niagara Falls, the information I received was the following: provided I enter the US at least once every six-months during our stay in Canada, and have my passport stamped accordingly, my Green Card would be 'secure'.
However, the last time I crossed in to the US (last month) I was told that this was absolutely not the case and that I needed to apply for a re-entry permit (I-131 if I am not mistaken). I downloaded this form and it seems to say that that form can only be filed FROM within the US - and I am currently living temporarily in Canada.
Please could you let me know what I need to do and what form(s) I need to submit in order to travel between the US and Canada for the duration of our 2-year stay in Canada?
Thank you.
