Retaining greencard

I am a permanent U.S resident and returned in my country for family business in february 2004.I called the American embassy and they informed me I need a returning resident visa + a new immigrant visa for the U.S. in order to return.
Can you please write to me if this is right due to the fact my green card expires in 2012?
