Hello
My 16 year old son's greencard was lost in June 2003. I applied for, and received a new card for him soon afterwards. Several weeks ago we took our first trip out of country (Niagara Falls) since he received his new card and we were stopped by immigration coming back into the USA. After a 2 hour wait we were told that INS just needed to check if we had found the old green card (which we have not).
My son has now gone to Spain for 7 weeks on an educational trip with Indiana University. I am concerned that he will experience the same problem when he arrives back in Chicago and get stopped at Immigration, missing his connecting flight and getting separated from the group that he is travelling with.
What can be done to resolve this situation - is there something that I need to do or can something be done by the immigration dept so that he is not stopped every time he re-enters the country?
Thank you for your help.
