Re entry permit

Dear Sir,

I am a US permanent resident, currently living in USA. I am also holding a valid British Passport. I general if even I am not a US resident I can always come to USA without a visa. Do I also still need the re entry permit if am leaving the USA for an year or more.

Please reply as I have to leave the country in a week.
