Return Green Card / Get Visitor Visa

My father, 72, gor his green card in 2007 and was in US Nov/Dec 2007. He has been outside US since end of Dec 2007. He did not apply for permission to be outside US for more than a year when he was in the US.

My father wants the ability to remain outside US - for more than a year. He also wants to come to the US may be 3 to 4 months every year or every other year.

Is there some mechanism by which he can return his GC and get multiple entry visa in lieu of the GC?

There is no such mechanism. Your father already lost his GC (Permanent residency status).

He has to apply for a B2 visitor visa, just like everybody else.

Thank you for the advice. ? I thought people with GC can stay up to one year outside the US without obtaining prior approval (and permission or pre-approval is required for stays one year or more in duration).

Permanent Residents are supposed to LIVE PERMANENTLY in the USA. They are not supposed to visit once a year...

A Permanent Resident Card is NOT a "border crossing card" or "enter the USA easily card".

If your father has no ways of showing ties to the USA in his next return, his status will be revoked.
