Retaining Green Card

I read the tips on retaining green card on your website. I wanted to know the risks involved with my case. We got the GC in Mar 2004. I visited India for 6 weeks in 2007 and 6 weeks in 2008. Continued stay from Jan 2009 until today. Before my husband and self started from there we applied for house short-sale in Nov 2008 which is still not approved. I am not maintaining my savngs account in US bank as my employer transfered my job to India and I am on INR payroll with employer. I will be filing US tax returns soon. Hopefully by this month end. We had financial problems with my husband without employment for 6 weeks before we came here to India in 2008. There was not enough for us to survive in US as we all invested in buying new house in US and some lands and properties in India.

I am in state my employer cannot send me back to US as there are no open opportunities at current time until next quarter. I am worried that I will loose my green card if I stay any longer here India.

My questions:

If I get a chance of going to US back in Nov or dec of 2009 (within 1 year stay outside of US), will there be any issues at the port of entry?

Are there any formalities I need to complete other than applying for US tax returns ?

Till date I have continuous stay of 5 months in India. How soon should I go back to retain my green card?

Since we got the house on short -sale will that impact us when we plan to return to US at port of entry?

What are the disadvantages and dangers in my case? How should I save my green card.
