Re-Entry Permit

pls I need your advice. I am a green card holder but was outside d United States for reseach purposes for 5 months. At d port of entry in d US, I was taken to passport control. They advised I get a reentry permit if I wanted to leave the country again.

Now, I need to leave again for 3 months to complete the research work, do I need a reentry permit? Will be glad if I receive a reply as soon as possible to enable me plan my travel arrangements. Thanks in anticipation.

It is strange that they asked you to get reentry permit when you were out of the US only for 5 months.

You don't need reentry permit if you are going to be out of the US for less than 6 months.
