  • Green card renewal application returned, need help

I really need some help from all of you.

I sent my son's Green card for renewal and it has been returned today along with my personal check for $370.
My son is now 16 Years and 4 months , he got his Green card in 2001
I could not renew his GC when he reached14 years old.

In the I-90 form, I had marked "g" in part-2, question-2. That is " I have reached my 14 th birthday..."

There are two reasons given for the rejection:
    1. The check amount is incorrect ( I enclosed a check for $370)
    2. The applicant marked "g" in part-2, question-2.

Not clear what mistake I did.

Should I have enclosed a different amount check?., if so how much?
Should I have marked "f" in part-2, question -2, "my present card has an expiration date and it is expiring" ( the actual date for expiry is 2012) or should I have marked something else

Can you all please provide your valuable advise?

    Thanks in advance,
    Punyavan Babu

According to the USCIS instructions, you have to register "within 30 days after reaching your 14th birthday to receive a card issued prior to your 14th birthday" and there is no fee for that, I belive. I think you have to wait until closer to the expiration of the GC now that the 14th yr old window has passed.

"If you are filing to register at age 14 years, your existing card will not expire before your 16th birthday and you are filing within 30 days of your 14th birthday.
    No fee no Biometric"

You should call USCIS to find out, as this is just my understanding of this matter.
    Best regards.

      Thanks mariejm

It is my bad that I didn't register within 30 days after turing age 14.
The current GC will expire only in 2012 ( my son is now 16+ and will turn 19 in 2012) . Will it be a problem since he crosses 18 in 2012 or six months prior to 2012 when I can apply for his GC renewal.

I will call USCIS as you advised to find out more info. But in fact I went to SFO immigration office ussing "infoPass" before filing my application and have them checked all info and the person in the couter said everything is okay. So do you think even if I call USCIS , whether they will give me correct informaiton?

You are welcome. Your son is fine as long as he has an expired GC. Just make sure he applies for a new one before the current one expires. Dont feel bad or guilty about not doing it at 14yrs, it happens . Us mothers have to keep up with everything else in our families, so we forget some these things. (And i am assuming a lot, cause if you are his father then uhmmm ). lol on me!

        All the best.
