Working on Green Card

Dear Sir/Madam,

I just landed in New York, USA on an immigrant visa. The home land security Officer at the airport stamped my passport "Admitted".

How soon can I work? Do I have to wait for the Social security card?

Also when I lived in the States a few years ago, I had a work permit and a Social Security number. Can I use this number or will the number change?
