  • can't renew driver licence until my green card expires in Georgia

I went to the DDS office today, and I was told I could not renew my driver licence until my green card expires. It does not make sense to me.
    That was in Columbus, GA.
I hold a temporary green card and it expires on the same day as my driver licence in three months, but I had the I-797 (green card extension).
The employee in the driver licence office got my I-797 Notice of Action, and told me she was not able to put the expiration date into the computer. The I-797 Notice of Action states my conditional resident status is extended for 18 months from the expiration date on my Form I-551 (Green Card).

If I'm not able to renew it before it expires, I won't be able to drive to the office to renew my licence and the office is somehow located in a place far away from town (10 miles).

Anyone knows more information about this , please let me know.

I don't know how that works in Georgia but here in Texas, if they can't confirm your legal status after X date (expiring visa with extension of status), they will scan all the documents presented and send them to DHS, they will check the legal status and the local office will send a letter to confirm the legal status. With that letter you go to renew the license and they will give a new one until the date the DHS can confirm your status. In your case for 18 months.

If you extension is recent, maybe that's why or maybe you need to ask to talk to a supervisor, I hope they can understand the situation and give you a license. Good luck.
