  • Do I really need to wait 6 months before green card expires to renew?

    Hello,

I've been a permanent resident since 2008. My mom married a US Citizen.

I am married now to a US Citizen myself and we have a son.

My green card expires in March of 2021 (next year)

Should I renew now online or wait till Aug/Sept of this year to apply for renewal?

And oh, I am in Florida as well. Curious about the timeline. Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

    From https://www.uscis.govhttps://www.immihelp.com/greencard-decoding-characters/after-green-card-granted/replace-your-green-card
If you are a lawful permanent resident, you must replace your Green Card if:
    • Your Green Card is either expired or will expire within the next six months;

How about applying for citizenship? You can do that now before it gets more expensive.
Nov 2018 - Package sent - EB - Texas Service Center
Day 1 - Package received at the lockbox
Day 999 - Card delivered to me - Aug 2021

I want to do that but I'm trying to join the military and they need a renewed green card at least for me to be able to move forward with the process. But if I renew now it's like 12 months before my card expires. Just curious if that's okay to do or do I really have to wait 6 months before it expires.

Yes, you have to wait until 6 months before the card expires to apply for renewal.

Did your mom become a US citizen before you turned 18? If so, you are likely already a US citizen.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

She did not. I do plan on becoming a US Citizen. But I also want to join the military, soon.

How long does it take from the time you apply online till the time you hear back that you've been approved for renewal?

The I-90 can take a year to process. But once you file I-90 you can go in to a USCIS office and get an I-551 stamp as proof of permanent residency in the meantime.
