  • Health insurance for parents on greencard

    Hi,

My parents recently received their Greencards and I wanted to get some information on what type of health insurance can I now get for them. They're both retired and plan to stay for a good amount of time (6-7 months) every year with us. We live in MA.

We would like to get out of the visitor health insurance that they currently are on as it provides minimal coverage and only for non-preexisting conditions.

Can they claim affordable health care insurance through Mass Health connector ?

    Thanks!

Yes. Since they are permanent residents, they can shop for Obamacare.
Go to healthcare.gov, enter your state and start shopping for plans.

Yes, they can buy a plan from the ACA marketplace. And yes, the ACA marketplace for Massachusetts is Health Connector. They have a special enrollment period until July 23 due to COVID-19. They should hurry to apply before that date or else they will have to wait until the open enrollment period at the end of the year. They can get a subsidy if their income is below 400% of the poverty level. (Although one usually can't get a subsidy if their income is below 100% of the poverty level, they still can get a subsidy even if their income is below 100% of the poverty level since they are not eligible for MassHealth (Massachusetts's Medicaid) since they have not had green cards for 5 years.)
