  • Removing SSN restrictions after GC. Is it necessary?

I got my GC in the mail yesterday. I got my SSN while on F1 Student visa and I worked on H1B visa for a very long time. Now that I have my GC, is it necessary to remove restrictions on SSN? How are people doing it in COVID times when SSA offices are by appointment only? Any advice?

It is not "necessary", as in nothing will happen if you don't; I know people who have naturalized for years and still have the restriction text on their card.

Removing the restriction test allows you to use the Social Security card as a List C document for the I-9, so you don't need to use your green card or (once you naturalize) your passport.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

No need to update SSN records now.
If you find a new job, you can use the existing SSN card that has the restriction along with your greencard.

Wait till you become a citizen to update the SSN record

Sure. Any specific reason to do after becoming a citizen?

            To name a few....
Validates your citizenship status / records with state and federal agencies
In some states, certain disability benefits are only available to citizens
