  • Maintaining US Permanent Resident (Green Card) Status

Am I required to own property in the US, like a house in order to maintain my Permanent Resident Status? I am a US Green Card holder, but I am not a homeowner. I live with a friend at the friends house and I'm not even on a lease / rental agreement. Would that be an issue during re-entry into the US and in general would that be an issue to maintain my Permanent Resident status if I don't own property (house) in the US and if I also do not have any residential rental lease/agreement to show?

You don't need to own a house, but you should maintain access to a home in the US. So either owning or renting a place would be useful to show that. "Staying with a friend" might be less convincing.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
