Lost Green Card/Transportation Letter

your site has been of much help to me, however I still have some questions and was hoping you may have the answers. I have been a permanent resident for the last 6 years, but am currently working for an american company in Germany. I don't know when I will be back in the US permanently yet, but it may take some time. I am filing my taxes in the US to ensure my status. Now, I lost my green card (probably stolen) and need to go back to the US in 3 weeks for a 1 week business trip. I read all about the transportation letter and am in contact with the embassy but was told it is given only once. Since I am only going for a week to the US, I won't have time to renew my card while I am there. Does this mean I need to legally abandon my status and reapply when I move back to the US? Or can I renew my card while I am in Germany once I have returned from my trip? What are my options?

I would appreciate any insights you may have and thank you in advance for your quick response, given the time pressure I have.

You will have to get the transportation letter, come to the US, apply for replacement green card in the US and then go back.

You may have to choose between your green card and your current job, in worst case.
