Spouse risking status to be with me during State Dept fellowship

Hello! I'm a native-born U.S. citizen who won a 10-month Fulbright fellowship from the US State Department. My spouse was recently granted a conditional permanent residence green card based on our marriage. If he moves abroad with me temporarily during the fellowship for more than 6 months, will he jeopardize his status? Could an exception be made since I'm participating in a State Dept program?

Can your spouse travel to the USA for a few days before the 6 months mark?
Is easy to answer the questions from the officer when the travel abroad is less than 6 months.

Are you returning to the USA in less than 1 year?
If you need to stay more than 1 year I think is safer to get a re-entry permit.

I don't now if there are other considerations for people participating in a State Dept program. Good luck.
