  • Changing address in US while holding green card

    Hello,
I'm a green card holder. I plan on moving within the US. I know I have to file AR-11 to notify USCIS of my address change.

    My question:

I will be moving fairly long distance (mid-west to west coast) and I plan on driving which will take a few days. Assuming I signed a lease in my new location (starts day X) and I don't get there until day X-plus-3/4. Is it correct that I submit my AR-11 on day X (just so I can get it done and not have to worry about it amidst moving/packing/unpacking)? I noticed the AR-11 form doesn't have a "move of date" so I guess they're not that specific.

However I'm also keeping in mind of naturalization down the road and so I want to get the date exact. In this case would I use day X as the start date of my new address? Sorry for the trivial question but in my past my moves have been really short, so it was literally here one day, there the next day.

Also would anyone who has submitted AR-11 online know if you get a receipt from USCIS? My green card process was done on paper by my lawyers so I never had a USCIS login, so I'm assuming I'll just submit the AR-11 online as directed on USCIS, but not having to create an account.

    Any inputs much appreciated!

You're overthinking it but it's not a bad thing Yes, start date of lease is your day #1 of new residence whether or not you are living in the new house. Not sure about the receipt.
