  • Green Card lost, I-90 approved, I-551 appointment pending, need to travel urgently

    Hi,

I lost my green card and applied for it online. I received online notice today on USCIS account stating that my I-90 was approved and currently they are in the process of producing/printing my green card, which I am assuming would take anywhere between 1-3 months to receive. I have to travel tomorrow night urgently to Paris for work. I had requested on a call to USCIS urgently to obtain info pass appointment for getting I511 stamped 72 hours ago, and I was hoping to get a call by now since for urgent questions average wait time is 72 hours. Following are my questions -

    1. Do I still require I551 stamped since I already have I90 approved online with receipt number?
    2. If in case they don't end up giving me a call to get me an appointment, can I still fly tomorrow?
    3. How long is the usual waiting time to schedule an appointment once they call for it?

Would appreciate your help, thank you

You can always leave the US; this issue is coming back. You are never "required" to get an I-551 stamp; but it's just the easiest and cheapest way for you to be able to get the airline to board you for a flight back to the US. You could wait until your new card is mailed to your address in the US, and get someone in the US to mail the card to you abroad for you to be able to board the flight back, but who knows how long it would take for the card to be mailed? The other alternative, if you don't have a green card or I-551 stamp, is you would file I-131A at a US consulate for a transportation letter (aka boarding foil), which would also get the airline to board you for a flight back to the US, but that costs another $575. Or, if you can somehow fly to Canada or Mexico, you don't have to worry about the airline not letting you board, and you can just cross the land border into the US with some copy of proof of your permanent resident status.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Thank you for reply, just to follow up on the progress, I couldn’t travel and attend meeting since I didn’t receive call for I551 appointment. My green card is being produced by USCIS of which I received notice online last week. Would appreciate your help in following questions -
      1. Does anyone know how long does it take for me to receive green card after this Status update?
      2. Are there any other status updates that I will receive after this notice from USCIS stating that my green card is being produced?
      3. My I551 stamp request was rejected, and I couldn’t travel last weekend, if green card is not received by me in time [in next one month], can I apply for I551 again because there is potential travel that is possible in next few days?
      4. Is there a minimum duration after first I551 request what I have to wait for before making a new request again
