Time Spent out of US

I am in need of some general information.

If a person has a VISA to live in the United States and has returned to her home country for a period of time, when must the person return to the U.S.
so that the VISA is not lost. I understand that she must return before the one year period expires.

The person arrived in the U.S. on March 8, 2009 and returned to her home country on January 5, 2010. What is the latest date she must arrive back
in the U.S. on to keep the visa active?

Summary:
The person has a Green Card.
She left on January 5, 2010.
What date must she return to the USA so as not to lose the Green Card?

I thank you kindly for replying to my email. In regards to your question below about whether I'm referring to the visa or the green card: I know that the person received an Immigrant Visa, and then received a green card. Thus I believe I'm referring to the green card.

The most urgent question is this: By what date must the person return to the USA?

She left the USA on the 5th of January. Must she return to the USA by the 4th, OR is returning on the 5th okay?
