Please share if parents need to come back to US within 6 months or can stay outside US for more than 6 months as long as they are back in US within one year? They don't want to jeopardize their GC but would like to stay in India longer than 6 months. If there are any USCIS links clarifying this, that would be really helpful. Thank you very much.

There is no rule that if they stay outside more than a certain length of time, they will definitely be considered to have abandoned status. And there is no rule that if they stay outside less than a certain length of time, they will definitely be considered to not have abandoned status. It's all a matter of degree. The longer they stay abroad, the more likely they will be determined to have abandoned status, but all the other factors in their situation are considered in the determination too.
This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

My parents are in a similar situation, and based on what we’ve learned, staying outside the US for more than 6 months but less than a year is usually okay, but it can raise red flags with CBP when re-entering. They might question whether you’ve maintained ties to the US, like a home, bank accounts, or other commitments. My folks try to come back before the 6-month mark just to avoid any hassle, but I’ve heard of others staying longer and carrying documents to show they haven’t abandoned their residency.
