GC holder in Overseas assignment and tax exemption

I am EAD, AP holder under my wife's sponsor, months away from the priority date awaiting for the GC. I am working with a US company and due to the recession they assigned me to work in a project in Saudi. Can somebody tell me what my options are in regard to taking advantage of the "tax exempt" opportunity I have if I go back to the US only for 35 days/year and at the same time not giving the idea that I want to abandon the process of being a US permanent residence and eventually a US citizen (while on EAD and once I get the GC)?
My wife and I have always filed taxes jointly woult it be a good idea to start filing separately?
