Is Change of Status from H1B to B2 mandatory before resigning

I am planning to quit my job and return to India.

Currently I am on H1B with I140 approved under EB3.

I will need about 45-60 days after I leave the job to take care of loose ends.

To avoid going out of status, my understanding is I need to apply for a change of status to B2 category BEFORE quitting. Is this correct?

I would like to avoid the extra paperwork and hassle if at all possible. What options do I have?
