  • Traveling to India - Immigration Help

    Hello experts,

I am travalling to India for vacation and I needed your help iin answering few questions that I have? Hope you can help me in that.

I have been living in US since 4 years now. I am on H1 visa. I am traveling to India this week. I am carrying personal items, gifts (worth approximately $200 - no electronics) and $500 in cash for personal use. I know we get a immigration form in the plane before we land. There is a column under the customs section "Total value of duitable goods being imported". The gifts that I am carrying consists of chocolates, deodrants, dry fruits. So in this case how much should I fill the column for the value of duitable goods. I don;t know if gifts are considered duitable.

I have been trying a lot to get this question answered. I have googled also but have not got concrete answers. Please help me in answering. Many times there are custom officers at the Mumbai airport who wait after baggage ang pull you to red channel probably to get some money out of you. I want to make sure I am under the law and now pay either the baggage helpers or the custom officers unnecessarliy.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Manish

Anything that you carry for "personal" use can be considered for your use. The customs page has goods upto 25k rupees duty free.

The goods you mentioned in the post need not be declared.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.
