Income tax to be paid when returning in Jan/Feb

Hi,

I am on L1B visa in the states for more than 18 months and I am planning to return back to India soon. The plan so far is to return on 27th Jan 2012. However, I have heard that if I extend my stay by a week and instead leave the United States in the month of Feb, I will have to pay lesser income tax for some reason both in the US and in India. In that case, I can easily extend my stay until 3rd Feb.

Could you please tell me more about this and how far this is correct?
