  • how long can I stay outside Canada without loosing my PR status

    Hey guys,

I'm a Permanent Resident of Canada and currently in USA from last 2 years and no plans to move back to canada any soon. Before moving to USA I stayed in Canada for about 11 months. So my question is how long can I stay outside Canada so I dont loose my PR status.

Thanks for your time to read this.

    To answer your question:
If you want to keep your permanent status, you must live in Canada for two years in every five-year period or you will loose your residency.

      Thanks a lot for reply.

Can I get the PR status again if I apply for it again later sometime(in case I plan to move to canada again) or there is some clause which prevents me from getting PR if I loose it once?

Well, I dont see why you could'nt apply again but next time round the Canadian CIC will remember you lost residency in the past and they might take that into consideration on the grounds that they think you might do it again!..Im not sure.

You should have held out in Canada and got Citizenship, because then under Canadian law you could have had applied for dual citizenship allowing you to still belong to Canada but live in the US (or whatever) and be a permanent resident or citizen of that country aswell.
